Cost Effective
Unlike traditional solar still designs built with metal and glass, the SunFilter is built using affordable, readily available plastics. Prototype SunFilters cost 85% less than a traditional still to yield the same amount of water per day; Mass Produced versions could be even more affordable.
The SunFilter is a solar still- it uses energy from sunlight to purify otherwise undrinkable water. Water evaporates inside the still, leaving behind salt, heavy metals and bacteria. The clean distilled water collects in the bottom of the still, ready to drink.
The SunFilter was designed in collaboration with Kenyan farmers living in drought zones. It's made to fit their needs. The SunFilter was created in an African context using locally available materials and tools. The design requires no electricity and could work in almost any situation- it's not limited to rural Kenya.
A New Water Source
The SunFilter can remove salt from seawater and soap from used washwater. It's not just a filter- it's a new source of drinking water.

The SunFilter functions as both a sustainable off-grid water source and an emergency water source during droughts and other natural disasters.
